Recently Heather Muir, a beauty director for both Health and Real Simple, underwent a facial from a board-certified master esthetician. Despite being assured that it would be a zero-downtime procedure, she endured some troubling side effects.
During the treatment, Heather began to feel pain that was unlike any of her many past facials. The discomfort quickly escalated to throbbing and burning.
Realizing that something was not right, Heather repeatedly expressed her concerns to the provider. Not only did the esthetician proceed with the facial, she dismissed Heather’s discomfort and attributed it to sensitive skin.
By the end of the treatment, the seasoned beauty director knew that she had experienced a facial gone wrong. Her skin appeared red and raw, and she felt a beating sensation.
She quickly saw her board-certified dermatologist, who informed her that she’d likely suffered chemical burns and prescribed a topical treatment to minimize the risk of scarring.
Following her physician’s recommendations, Heather’s wounds began to improve after one-and-a-half weeks and fully healed by two weeks.
To avoid being a victim of facials gone wrong, it’s important that patients take necessary precautions before and during treatment.
You should always research the provider, including his/her education, training, and years of experience. It’s also essential to listen to your gut if you find yourself in a similar situation as Heather.
In the event that you are in pain and the provider is not appropriately responding to your feedback, you should feel free to discontinue the facial and leave. No matter how awkward it may initially be.
